Cutting

Cut 2.5" strips from the the piecing fabrics in the following amounts.

  • Color A - 8 strips
  • Color B1 - 3 strips
  • Color B2 - 3 strips
  • Color C1 - 2 strips
  • Color C1 - 2 strips

From those strips, cut them down to 2.5" squares until you have the number of squares below (You'll probably want to cut some extras - just in case). You should be able to get 16 square per strip.

  • Color A - 123 squares
  • Color B1 - 34 squares
  • Color B2 - 34 squares
  • Color C1 - 29 squares
  • Color C2 - 26 squares

Cut each of those squares on an angle, so you have two triangle pieces from each square. Borders I'd wait to cut the borders until you are done piecing, just in case you need to make adjustments.

  • Border 1 - cut 3 - 2.75" strips
  • Border 2 - cut 4 - 5" strips
  • Binding - cut 4 - 2.5" strips

Piecing

The steps of piecing are illustrated in the photo.

    1. Sew each B and C color triangle to a Color A triangle along the long side.
    2. Press the seams toward Color A
    3. Sew together the same colored squares along the non-Color A side, as you would to create Flying Geese.
    4. Press the seams to one side. Set aside one of Color C1 and 2 each of Colors B1, B2, and C2.
    5. Sew pieces together along like colored edge. The final square should be a diamond of one color, with corners of Color A.
    6. You should have the following number of blocks:
      • Color B1 - 13 squares; 2 halves
      • Color B2 - 14 squares; 1 half
      • Color C1 - 18 squares; 2 halves
      • Color C2 - 18 squares; 2 halves
    7. Lay out the rows and sew together as follows:
      1. B1 B2 B1 B2 B1 B2 B1 B2 B1 B2(half block)
      2. C2(half block) C1 C2 C1 C2 C1 C2 C1 C2 C1
      3. B2 B1 B2 B1 B2 B1 B2 B1 B2 B1(half block)
      4. C1(half block) C2 C1 C2 C1 C2 C1 C2 C1 C2
      5. B1 B2 B1 B2 B1 B2 B1 B2 B1 B2(half block)

  • Press seams
  • Sew together rows and press seams.
  • Sew on border 1. Press. Sew on border 2.
  • Press the quilt
  • Back, quilt, and bind the quilt. I quilted it by squiggling back and forth in the Color A areas. There are close-ups of the stitching in the images.
